Hi, you should say Students with disabilities. Or you could say the ESE program. But honestly, it's a program for students with disabilities. I'm a teacher and I really don't see a "program" despite the government's label of the word program. I think we need to simply say educating students. The less labels the more inclusive.

Kelly O'Connor, so you prefer to say you are a special education teacher because you think it gives recognition to the behind the scenes work you do?
I wish I could say I'm just an English teacher instead of a special education teacher, but that would be leaving 70 percent of my job out of the equation. I have a teacher of record (TOR) list with over 30 kids on it, which requires me to schedule 30+ conferences and prepare 30+ sets of IEP paperwork related to those conferences. This gives me a lot less time to prepare for English classes and a lot less time for grading. How do I explain to my students why I don't have time to update grades today? I cannot dedicate all my time and energy to being a great teacher and supporting students in the classroom because my time is spent on paperwork!

In reply to <a href="https://www.audacitymagazine.com/stop-using-the-term-sped/#comment-41524">Mindy</a>.

Hi, Mindy. The term special education is offensive. If we think logically, we know that a disabled person isn't getting a special education. I am disabled and I was taught everything that my peers were taught. When you say it's a school that focuses on educating students with disabilities, what is it teaching exactly? When the students in the classroom are being taught, what are they learning? Reading, writing, math, art, music? If so, that's not special. They are disabled students learning the same subjects. Perhaps you are using different teaching styles? If so, that's fine. You are focusing on teaching students with disabilities or disabled students. I teach students with learning disabilities. I teach Language Arts to students without disabilities as well. But I don't identify the students. I identify the subject. There's nothing special about either group. Hope that helps. Just say you are a teacher. You teach students with disabilities. My bigger question is why do you have to tell people that? You're a teacher. That's a big deal in itself. Thank you for reaching out. Please continue to ask question. Isn't that what we would our students to do as well?

I came here hoping to find out if the term "Special Education" was offensive. Thank you for clarifying. However, what term should I use instead? I am more than happy to eliminated the SPED term (and it's variants) from my vocabulary, but I don't know the appropriate term to use for, say, the classroom or program at school that focuses on educating students with disabilities.
