For those of us Gen Xers who remember gathering around the TV during prime time to watch Erik Estrada’s dazzling smile and heroic motorcycle rides on CHiPs, there’s a special thrill in seeing our childhood icon still doing what he does best—connecting with hearts. But this time, it’s not through a TV screen. It’s through the pages of a children’s book.
Yes, you read that right. Estrada, forever etched into Gen X history, has teamed up with bestselling author Steven Manchester to co-create Officer Erik and the Very Special Dad—a tender, powerful story that bridges generations and honors disability, dignity, and kindness.
The book follows the friendship between a neighborhood police officer (spoiler alert: yes, that Officer Erik) and a father with a disability who lives with Multiple Sclerosis. Together, they help an elderly couple in need and show readers—young and old—that being a hero isn’t about flashing lights and sirens. It’s about compassion, teamwork, and showing up for your community.
I read the book myself, and let me be clear: Officer Erik and the Very Special Dad deserves a spot in every elementary and middle school library. It’s nostalgic for us Gen Xers, but it’s heartwarming and meaningful for today’s kids—whether they’re being raised by Millennials, mentored by Gen Z, or growing up in Gen Alpha classrooms.
And let’s give credit where it’s due: Steven Manchester’s storytelling brings depth and warmth to the page, making the message accessible and unforgettable. His writing has a way of meeting kids where they are while lifting them up to a higher understanding of empathy and inclusion.
As a Latina, I’m incredibly proud to share the work of another Latino who is using his platform to promote inclusive, heartfelt storytelling. Representation matters—and this book delivers it with warmth, purpose, and sincerity.
Even better? A portion of the proceeds will be donated to MS charities. That’s impact on and off the page.
I’ve always admired Erik Estrada—but seeing him champion stories like this? Makes me want to meet Ponch—I mean, Officer Erik—even more.
