Real Life. Physical Disabilities. Audacious Living.

By Nathasha Alvarez

In the mid-1990s, I was stuck in bed with a fractured pelvis after falling out of my wheelchair. My sister, Ingrid, did what any good sister would do — she brought me a giant pile of magazines to distract me from the pain.

But as I flipped through page after page of hiking tips, mountain climbing triumphs, and “bold adventures to heal your heartbreak,” all I could think was: Who writes this stuff?

How many people with Osteogenesis Imperfecta were scaling cliffs? Sometimes just getting out of bed felt like a Paralympic event. Not a single magazine was speaking to people like me — people with physical disabilities.

That’s when Ingrid said it:

“Make one yourself.”

So I did.

Armed with scissors, glue, ripped-out articles, and a bold idea, I started building the lifestyle magazine I wished existed. One that included fashion, dating, money, hobbies, sex, travel — all for our community. Not about overcoming us. About seeing us.

From Dream to Reality

The first version of Audacity was built by a group of friends with physical disabilities who shared one vision: a magazine that represented us, not just talked about us.

The cost of printing stopped us — but the dream didn’t.

With the help of our growing online community and the support of friends like Athena Cooper (who built our first site), Laura Stinson, Dave Good, Michelle Henson, Frankie Gomez, and Damian P. Gregory, AudacityMagazine.com officially launched in 2003.

Since then, we’ve grown, evolved, and built a global community that proves one thing:

People with physical disabilities deserve bold, real representation — not pity.

Our Mission

Audacity Magazine empowers people with physical disabilities to live boldly and unapologetically.

Through real stories, honest conversations, and practical resources, we reflect both who we are and who we aspire to be.

We are:

  • ✊🏽 Real stories for real people living real lives.
  • 🙅🏽 Zero pity. All power.
  • 💬 A lifestyle magazine that respects disability as part of a full, dynamic life.

Where We Are Today

Today, Audacity Magazine is a for-profit media platform focused entirely on people with physical disabilities.

We are growing through:

  • Sponsorships
  • Brand partnerships
  • Premium content
  • Reader support

And we’re proud to say: we don’t dilute our message. This space was created by and for people with physical disabilities—and that will never change.
